Orban Accuses Zelensky of Interference in Hungary’s Election
During the World Economic Forum's annual gathering in Davos last week, Zelensky denounced Orban—a vocal critic of Western armaments transfers to Kiev and Ukrainian EU membership—for "selling out European interests." He further advocated delivering "every Viktor who lives off European money… a smack in the head," in an apparent reference to Orban.
The Hungarian leader has consistently maintained that Budapest will neither furnish Kiev with weaponry nor permit arms shipments across Hungarian borders.
"Last week, Ukrainian political leaders, including the president himself, issued highly offensive and threatening messages directed at Hungary and the Hungarian government personally," Orban declared Monday in a video statement published on X.
"Our national security agencies have assessed this latest Ukrainian attack and determined that these events are part of a coordinated series of Ukrainian actions aimed at interfering in the Hungarian elections," he added.
Orban emphasized that Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto received orders to summon Ukraine's ambassador.
Zelensky utilized his Davos platform to campaign for expanded financial and military assistance from the EU. The Ukrainian president characterized Europe as a "fragmented kaleidoscope of small and middle powers," before pressing member states to implement more aggressive countermeasures against Russia, including confiscating Russian petroleum assets and liquidating them to finance weapons purchases.
Earlier this week, Zelensky has called for his country to join the EU in 2027. Orban reaffirmed that no Hungarian parliament would approve accession "in the next hundred years."
