Russia Rejects EU ‘Position of Strength’ in Discussions

(MENAFN) Russia stated on Tuesday that while it remains open to dialogue with the European Union, it rejects any communication framed “from a position of strength,” according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova.

“We never closed the door on them. We said that it is unacceptable to communicate with us from a position of strength, that we cannot be treated rudely, and that no one can interfere in our internal affairs,” Zakharova told RIA Novosti.

She criticized several European nations for operating under what she called a “command-and-control system” led by NATO and the EU, while simultaneously attempting to maintain bilateral ties with Moscow. Hungary, she noted, serves as the “most striking example” of this approach.

On the topic of Ukraine, Zakharova dismissed President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s plans to deliver a “strategic defeat” to Russia, claiming they have failed. She accused Kyiv of resorting to “vengeance” tactics after suffering a “crushing defeat” and asserted that its objectives are unlikely to be realized.

Relations between Russia and the EU have sharply declined since the start of the war in Ukraine in early 2022, marked by sanctions, diplomatic restrictions, and hardened rhetoric on both sides. Moscow maintains that dialogue remains possible, but only on terms of equality and mutual respect.
